Clinical Efficacy of Ceftazidime(Fortum^(¢ç)) in Febrile Patients with Blood Diseas and Hematologic Malignancy

Kim Jeong-ll

Abstract
To assess the clinical efficacy of ceftazidime (Forturn¢ç) for initial menagement of febrile patients with blood disease and hematologic malignancy, w ; conducted a trial using ceftazidime alone or combination with piperacillin and aminoglycoside in 24 patients during the last 8 months.
The results were as follows.
1. We had "Cure" in 13 cases (54 %), "Improvement" in 6 cases (25 %), and "Failure" in 5 cases (19 %), namely, overall clinical response rate was 79 %.
2. Therapeutic response rates according to inital granulocyte count were 92 %, and 64 % in patients above and below 500/mm3 respectively.
3. There were no differences in response rates according to underlying diseases and sites of infection.
4. In MDI, response rate (100 %) was superior to that of CDI (71 %), possibly due to early addition of sensitive antibiotics.
5. Only in 2 cases, mild nausea was noted after N injection and, no deterioration of liver and renal function was demonstrated.
These results indicated that ceftazidime, alone or combination with other drugs, could be suitable as an initial drug in febrile patients with blood disease and hematologic malignancy without notable side effects.
